Is there anything you can feed cat to reduce potent-smelling

My friends went away for 4 days and I looked after their cats. I nearly balked each time I cleaned the tray of their big male. He is 6 years old and wasn't neutered until AFTER he'd started spraying, which I thought could be a cause, but they advise me his urine has always had the strong ammonia smell since he was a kitten. This seems to rule out kidney infection etc ... he's occasionally been on antibiotics for ear infections but the urine has always smelt bad. He is very overweight, but he was a normal size kitten.

I have 2 male cats and don't have any problems with odours like this. As I will be looking after this cat again, I would love to reduce the smell before I go near his litterbox again.
He needs to be checked again. One of the major hallmarks of kidney decline is the strong ammonia smell. The vet needs to examine this cat.

If the box is clean and you're removing all wet and dry areas, it should not stink to high heaven.
IMO he's got medical problems. Has he ever been checked out by the vet? Neutering late may have some thing to do with it. But I know breeders who have neutered a stud cat - after a few months the urine doesn't have that strong smell any more.

So to me, the cat has a medical issue that is not being addressed. Or he's not drinking enough water to dilute the urine.
