My foster kittens just got fixed and we were given pain medication I haven't seen before. I gave it to them and they started to foam at the mouth, like it tasted really bad. They got over it eventually but I'm still a bit worried.
It's called Tramadol, and it's supposed to cause drowsiness but it said nothing about the foaming. I'm also a little hesitant to give it to one of my kittens, George, because he has a bad case of upper respiratory infection.
What should I do?
This drug does taste bad hence the foaming. This drug does not cause noticeable if any drowsiness but for some reason vets like to put it on the lable. If it's a pill then try putting in a food ball (pill pockets are great) just enough to cote the pill and then give it. George will be fine it you give it. If its a liquid then yes they will foam but they will get over it. Have fresh food available to get the taste out of their mouth.
If a cat tastes medication that they do not like the first reaction is the saliva get foamy. To prevent this, drop the pill towards the back of the mouth, close the mouth and stroke the throat. This will cause the cat to swallow. Not all cats need pain meds after surgery. If George was neutered, she most likely doesn't need pain meds. I hope the vet treated him for the upper respiratory infection.
Call your vet and ask if the foaming is normal, and also if it's safe for your sick kitten. They should be able to answer all your questions. Cheers!
cats dont like flea spray or pain medication it make them foaming at the mouth or tables to or worming tables u can tell if u dont like some thing they cant and foaming at the mouth is their way of tell u mash it up put in food or a little butter or tuna fish
My cat does that whenever i have to give her meds, i think its a cat's way of spitting it out to get bad taste out of their mouth
