Yep, a lot of answers given so far are right. One time when my family and I went on vacation my cat used the dining room for her litter box, when we came home we called the vet and the vet said that if the cat only peed in the dining room it was probably sick, but if it did all it's business in the dining room it was because the cat was getting revenge for leaving her alone.

Cats can be attention whores when they feel like it, so if it decided it wanted attention while you were away it got ticked cause it didn't get it. My cat would wake me up in the middle of the night by clawing my dresser when she was in the mood for attention, and she wouldn't stop clawing the dresser until I got out of bed and chased after her. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

As to your petting problem, cats in nature rarely have contact with other animals, and when they do its for fighting or for mating. Your cat is probably on edge with the other cats outside and feels that its territory is being threatened so it takes any contact as being a threat. But inside your cat's territory is protected and your cat doesn't have a reason to be territorial.
Hes angry at you for leaving him alone for such a long time.

My cat always does this but she gets over it within a week.

And I think they do get embarrassed when ever my cats playing and misses the ball she always will pretend she was cleaning her self so she doesn't look like a loser for not catching the ball.
I travel for 2-4 weeks at a time. I own three kitties - one is older and she could care less. Two are like my baby boys, the one kitten that I hand raised from 2 wks with a bottle - he gets this attitude everytime I come home. He is not left alone my bro and his kids live here but he gets what I call spiteful. He will even knock things down and watch them fall. He will sleep in my lap but when his "brother" is around .. no, he acts like he is king and i must come to him for affection. While is brother is total opposite no reaction when I leave, loves me no matter what and is a total goof ball
Your cat is sad that you left him home alone for a long time. He has also not had attention for a while so give him a moment to get used to and warm up to you again. My cat did thtis for 3 years and she has only just started warming up to me again. if this stage goes past 3 weeks, i recommend seeing a vet because it just gets worse. Good luck!!
Cats have emotion. They feel pain and loneliness like humans do. They are just proud and hide it. When he's outdoors, he's probably more interested in all the other cats and doesn't want anything else taking up his attention.
Gay and no emotions?! Hahaha! That was too cute! Anyways, your cat is missing you so when you come back home, he's probably a little miffed at you for leaving him alone. Cats and embarrasment? I won't even touch on that one! Haha!
Because he is mad that you left. Mine sits by the door when I leave and is by the door when I come back. I have 2 others that can care less.
so long
your cat is angry at you for leaving him and feels abandoned. cats have human emotions, because i've fed strays and there was a blind kitten and all the strays let him take part of their food, even though they were real hungry, and my bigger and tougher cat always let the smaller cat eat first and acted real gentle and worried when she was sick. cats have more human emotions, sometimes, than we do. how many kids would treat a blind kid that way, instead of bullying him?

your cat is busy with other cats outside. there are interesting things to do out there, and see, and stalk. he doesn't want to be bothered. he's got bigger mice to fry.

and he's real nice before you leave because he knows he'll miss you. many cats are mind readers, mine was when he was young and kind of lost it when he got older.
