what is the best way to get rid of a stray cat?

We just moved into a new area and this white cat keeps bothering us. It always tries to sneak into our house or cars. IT also gets into the garbage. Another thing is it has a colar on it and We see it at all times of the night. Our neighbor said it just shows up, its not his and he doesnt like it either.
Throw it in a wheelie bin.
Why not try something nice. Put a note on the collar letting the owners know that the cat is coming on to your property and you are asking them to keep the cat indoors. Now, is it possible that the previous owners of the cat lived in your house before you moved in? Did someone dump off the cat? Have you looked in the paper to see if the cat is lost. Have you called animal control to see if someone has reported their cat missing. Just some thoughts.
Since it has a collar, it is obviously owned by somebody - possibly someone that doesn't even live in your neighborhood (cats have a remarkable ability to navigate far from home without getting lost). If the cat seems friendly and you are comfortable approaching it, try looking at its collar to see if there is any identification or contact info for its owner. Putting a note in its collar is also a good idea. If you are Not comfortable handling the cat in any way, then call animal control to pick it up. They will take it to a shelter where he will at least be safe and off the streets. It's possible that he may already be reported as missing, in which case he will be quickly back on his way home.
We had a stray that looked like it might have a skin disease,

I've found that cats sense when they are not welcome.

It took a couple of weeks, in a moderately loud tone and chasing him away

anytime he entered the yard, he finally got the message and would

walk passed, never closer than the curb.

This aggressive behavior has worked ever since.

I think they feel your marking your territory, and respect that.

We only had one (a younger cat) that was persistent, so twice, we squirted him with

the garden hose and never saw him again.
Do not feed the darn thing!!! It will never go away. Make sure all trash cans are secured so it's not his/her food source. Leave the windows up in the car at all times too (of course). The previous owners probably fed it and that's why it keeps coming back. You can also use a squirt gun or some of the cat repellant products.

You can always check to see if it has a tag but I guarantee you animal control isn't coming to chase down a cat :-)

PL
call animal control/humane society about it. If it has a collar it's somebody's cat and it's pretty likely it's illegal to let a cat roam free like that where you live. Some sort of authority needs to be notified about this if it's actually trying to get into your house and car and not just walking across your property. if they're too incompetent to help you, get a live trap and put something yummy in there for it. if you catch it, take it to animal control/humane society yourself or take it back to the owner and tell them they're making their cat a nuisance.
the most humane way would be to take it to a local shelter or organization so that it can be adopted into a caring home --- outside of that all cats crave 2 things from people - attention and food - if you do not feed the cat and do not pet it or have contact with it the cat will go to another home where it will get these things --- i bet if you call your local vets offices they can get you in touch with some one that will take the cat and find it a home so long as it is healthy and not ferel. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

If you see a tag on the collar you may be able to track down the owner --- it sounds as if some one may have moved off and left the cat since it seems used to being inside. Tie down your garbage lids and the only way i would recommend to chase the cat from your yard or garage is with noise or at most a squirt gun filled with water .. it's to bad you have to be troubled because some one else is neglecting or has abandoned the animal.
Go to your LOCAL humane's Society and "rent" a cage (you get your money back when u bring back the cage) and trap the cat.

I live in a mobilehome park and this has happened to us a million times. 3 of our 6 cats were dumped off in our mobilehome park and we adopted them. We have 2 strays roaming our yard in the last month (we have alot of birds ) I posted a notice in our mobilehome paper that these so called cat owners who have decided to make their cats OUTSIDE cats ..... will lose their cats and if they want them back the Humane's Society charges 225 $ to get them back.

Last year someone in the park let their Pure white declawed cat outside because their roomate was allergic (tough s ^ &%) and she ended up in our yard. White, no calws, abandoned. We looked for the owner for over 2 weeks and finally took her to the Humane's Society. The guy showed up at our door step 4 days later because he saw our poster we made trying to find him. We told him we had taken her to the HS. He was furious when he got back because they charged him 225 $ to get his cat back. TOO BAD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You can't just have a cat and let it outside to do what it wants and be destructive and on top of it .... most of you do it WITHOUT getting the cat fixxed !!!!!!!!!!!! so on top of everything the males PI # $ all over my home, my yard and my car. Do the right thing and take this cat to your local shelter.
