My cat Hyde, a four year old black and white domestic male cat has been seriously ill for a week now. It started last Thursday evening when I found him on the floor and he was unable to lift up his back to walk. He could use his legs and move his tail, but was unable to walk without falling over. We took him straight to the ER and had him checked out there, they were worried about either diabetes or a metabolic disorder and did bloodwork. All of his bloodwork was fine , potassium was good and blood sugar was a tiny bit high but she said that was of no concern, it could've been from stress. We ended up taking him home that night but the next morning I took him to our own veterinarian. She looked like she was stumped by the way he was walking and standing and came to the conclusion that it was nerve damage, basically she said he fell funny or he could've been stepped on. I don't know if I entirely believe that. .. He has been eating well, I do wish he would drink more but I've been mixing water with his food. He only poops and pees once a day, if that ... so that kind of bothers me but other than that he is fine. He is on prednisone twice a day and antibiotics as well. I have been giving him a daily vitamin along with that. We have noticed some changes ... he seems to be having feeling where he previously had none ... he will raise up his back a little bit when you pet him and now he can sit up a little bit more. He's not out of the woods yet but I can't stop thinking that there is something more to it than nerve damage .. .. can anybody tell me if they have ever seen something like this or know of somebody who has experienced anything at all like what I'm going through with Hyde ... he's been my kitty for four years and he means everything to me. I just need to feel reassured that I know what is wrong with him. I've checked so many different symptoms online ... some of them match but never quite enough. I did see a video online about vestibular disease in cats ... it was about a cat named Billy who recovered from it. It looked almost identical to how Hyde was walking except that he doesn't have his head turned to the side which is the main symptom. If anybody has any suggestions or advice please let me know! I would appreciate it and I want to find answers. Thank you so much!
Vestibular disease is an inner ear imbalance, not exactly nerve damage. Have they done x-rays? If not then I highly recommend getting some spinal x-rays done at least. Hyde could have a staircased vertebrae, or other disk problem causing this. Did they give you anti-inflammatories? I don't understand why they gave prednisolone (at least it should be prednisolone, cats can't tolerate straight prednisone) from the information you've supplied ... or anti-biotics for that matter unless they suspect meningitis .... but that would require multiple heavy-duty antibotics, and he would've had an elevated wbc count on his CBC ....

From the information give, I can't be sure. I'd definitely get the spinal x-rays done ASAP, and if those prove insignficant, then next step would probably be a CT scan to check for spinal or brain tumors.
