Here is what happened - the cat sometimes likes to run up to me and chase my hand around (I use my hand as a "spider" of sorts), and when she "catches" my hand, I give her a little shove. She runs over to a hiding spot, and then races back to chase my hand again.

However, this time, I was doing this on an outdoor deck. There was apparently a lot of ice out there, because when I shoved the cat, she went sliding right across the surface of the deck, right through the railing bars, and ended up falling about five feet before splashing into a freezing cold bucket of rainwater.

She panicked and ran back into the house through her cat door and is now hiding on top of a hot air vent near the garage.

I tried to approach her, but she ran away.

How long until she's back to normal?

Bad accident there. Try feeding it some treats and be CAREFULL next time!

you have to be patient. let the cat come to you. get a cat toy on a stick some cat nipp and sit down next to the hiding spot and try to coax her out.

kitty is scared, and cold. embarassed about the wet hairdo, and needs to compose herself. give her a while, shell be out and about soon enough. My cat hates my ex. but my ex was an ***. we been apart for 2 years, and my cat still chews, and claws his arm.

Give her some cat treats and let her come back to you. It will take time because she is afraid to have another accident when she goes near you.

Hahahaha.... I hate it when i accidentally make an animal mad at me. Don't worry, it wont last long. Just give it a night and when you wake up in the morning slowly go toward the cat, almost halfway toward her and the bend over, say "come here kitty kitty!", and reach your hand toward her. Then she will come to you..... if she doesn't you might actually injured her, and your girlfriend might wanna take her to the vet.

Leave her alone for a little while. She is rightfully upset. Could be she isn't even upset with you so much as she is simply upset!

When she does come to you be extra nice.

I would give her at least a day -- she's had 1 heck of a stressful day!
Cats don't like water, they don't like to fall uncontrollably, and they don't usually like the cold.
Add to that she may associate you with the entire incident, she may be uneasy around you for up to a week.
Just walk/move slowly around her and talk softly around her until she relaxes. Don't grab for her -- she will re-stress. Let her make the moves telling you it's OK to pick up/give love/etc.

PS. You want to be a little careful with the hand game -- in time this very game is usually what teaches cats play aggression... they start out playing, move up to scratching and biting to "catch" the toy (your hand), and eventually play aggression becomes real aggression. You'd know real aggression by the teeth marks and scratches. If it happens, DO NOT yank your hand away -- this usually causes more damage, because claws are not built to let go that way. Simply make a small hissing sound and stop playing for a few minutes. This tells kitty she got a little carried away (that's how mama kitty socializes - by ignoring, since kittens hate to be ignored, and giving them a small bat or a hiss) and in time she associates it with what you don't want her to do. A calm 'no' also helps. Never hit, never yell. Cats don't understand 'alpha' behavior like dogs do.
