Am I feeding my cat enough? How much food do you feed your cat?
My cat's a little over a year old. She's a little smaller than most cats but still a normal size, not skinny or fat. She's around five pounds.

I only give her wet food (I'll switch between Wellness and Core Wellness). I feed her twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Each serving is about 1/3 the size of the little cans that are the size of a hockey puck.

Is that too little? Are you supposed to give them as much as they can eat in one sitting?

She'll eat her food pretty fast. I'm thinking that's just how cats eat and she'll do that no matter how much I give her. She always seems happy to get more food. How do you know if it's too little or too much?
answer:
A half a can twice a day (you are describing the 5.5 oz can - nicely done with the hockey puck comparison!) is enough for an average cat. Your cat is petite, so try 1/2 can in the morning and 1/3 can at night and see how she does with that. I'm suggesting a small increase because she's young and probably active. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

The best way to tell if it's too little or too much is to look at your cat. If you think she's getting a little chunky, then you can cut back.

Good luck to you, and good for you for splurging on the good stuff for your cat!
That sounds like enough. When I fed my cats canned (I now feed raw) my 11 pound cat got a 5.5 oz can a day. If your cat does not gain weight or lose weight then that's the amount of food she needs. You can give her more. Cats often dont gain weight on canned. Just monitor her weight and if she starts to gain weight start feeding her 2/3 a can a day again.
It's going to depend on the breed of cat and their age. If you have a full-sized Mainecoon or large breed then you'll feed it more. When they are young they will need to be fed more to promote growth.
Don't just let her eat as much as she can, that will cause her to get fat quick. I say 1/2 can twice a day would be fine for a standard sized kitty.
She is very small for a 1 year old cat at only 5 pounds. Feed her 1/2 can in the morning and the other half at night. Leave out some dry food during the day as cats like to munch. Remember the daily fresh water

4 cats and this is how I feed. All healthy and in the range of 8 to 10 pounds.
If you feed your cat too much she will get fat. If you feed her too little, she will eat foods that seem odd for her (like snatching bread from the table etc.).

I think from what you describe you feed your cat just right. Keep it up.
Did you read the side of the can. It should tell you how much to feed her of the kind of food. All foods have different calorie counts.
i just keep my cats food bowl full but some cats will keep eating and eating until they get sick so i dont know about your case and my cat isnt overweight
Take a look at DearTabbyTheAnswerCat.com. Under "Cat Care" they have a good article on feeding cats.
The best thing you can do is look at her body condition. If you see ribs and bony hips, that means she's not eating enough. If you can feel ribs fairly easily but you don't see any ribs, that's great. If in doubt, ask your vet next time you're in for an exam. Anyway, yes, 5 pounds is a petite kitty so 2/3 a can a day may be plenty for her. If she's not skinny, I wouldn't worry. Some cats just love to eat. I have one of those where if he ate as much as he wanted, he would literally be 6 pounds overweight (because he used to free feed and he was 6 pounds overweight..lol). You chose a great food with the canned Wellness.
