what is the best cat litter to use?

We just got a cat and we have an apartment so i really need a type of litter that can control the odor in a small area and something that clumps up when the cats goes would be great. I think that should help keep the cat box clean most of the time. I really don't feel like trying every brand out to find the perfect one so if anyone has tried anything they really liked please let me know whats best. Also im using fresh step right now and it does nothing for the odor.
We use Scoop Away clumping litter. It absorbs all the odor (especially from the cat pee, which is such an awful scent if it gets out). We live in a small condo and don't have any problems with the smell. We also scoop out and discard all the clumps every evening, so the box never gets too dirty.
a lot of people will say try out lots, but that is just expensive. I think we used a couple that we got given by other people who had cats who didn't use it any more/had died. One was recycled newspaper pellets, and the other was pine sawdust pellets. They disintegrate where the cat goes, so you can always tell, but really you only need to pick up around where they cr * p. The newspaper one was scentless, the pine one masks the smell. From memory, I think the kitten preferred the newspaper one, but it all depends on the cat.
I have been using World's Best Cat Litter. It is 100% safe .... it's corn. There is NO silica in the litter which overtime can harm your animal. Yes, World's Best is more expensive, but it is worth it. I have used it in a motorized litter box as well as regular litter box. I find I can go longer with this litter than others. Just scoop out the waste and add more from time to time. Petco, Target, Pet Supermarket, etc. carry this litter .... along with some supermarkets. The "green" bag is the one I use. The "red" bag is for multiple cats, but I used the "green" bag even when I had two cats. Good luck with your decision.
There is a new one at pet shops that people swear by. It is called The Worlds Best Cat Litter. It is made from corn and clumps. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

Right now I use two kinds and mix them. One is TIDY CAT and a pine litter. I also use Arm and Hammer Baking Soda in the litter box. I raise Sphynx and have no problems with smell. I clean the litter boxes (3) out at least twice a day. And once a month I empty and wash the litter boxes.
I have used them ALL

-Arm and Hammer

-Feline Pine

-Costco Brand

-Johnny Cat

-Scoop Away

-Wheat based ... you name it!

the only one that works for me is FRESH STEP regular .. (not the crystals) I have an Apartment too and 2 cats. They share one box. Seriously you can skip a day and it still wont smell like urine.

I use it with some arm and hammer litter powder odor control sprinkled in every few days and if scooped daily, one batch will last a week or more. Depending on how many cats/litter boxes you use.
For ordor control, I love the blue Fresh Step crystals. No smell. You scoop out the poop daily or every other day. The pee is absorbed and you cannot smell it. I change the litter box once per month for one cat. If you have two cats, it may have to be changed more often.
Get harm and hammer malti cat litter (its made for more then one cat but it is very good) it clumps great and is easy to clean out. you should scoop the box everyday to keep it fresh. Sprinkie baking soada that gives it a good cent
Cats like clay litter best.As for odor control, try putting a little baking soda in the litterbox before you fill it.Also add some on top after filling.
I use Tidy Cats. It doesn't clump, it absorbs the pee. It works really well in small spaces.
