This is a follow up question to my original one about will my 2 cats ever get along ....
I'm doing the squirt bottle right now when my male cat gets out of hand and too aggressive. He seems to know now that he's not to chase or attack my female because he will stop short and meow, meow, meow and walk away. Do you think this is progress? Problem is what happens when I'm not home to squirt him!
I can't do much with treats/training because she is hiding under the couch and I can't get her out unless I lock him up in a room. It's a little hard to groom her or pet her even when I have to lay on the floor and reach! LOL.
What happens is your female stays out of his way when you aren't home. Love the squirt bottle though. Teaches discipline which is good. He need to know that you, his master ( lover & feeder) do not approve of him attacking your little girl.
I know it's a pain but they will get used to each other. It's a matter of time, patience (you) and discipline (from you).

I can tell you are a true animal lover and just want the best for both of them! Bless your heart.;)
Dear Nancy,
I just answered your first, and if the squirt bottle is working it will probably only work for so long. He'll get use to it. Time is what it will take. They will figure it out by themselves it just takes time. The more, even without showing it, anxious you are about this they both are picking up on it. The only advice I can give you is to let them decide but don't be to far away if a throw down fight breaks out, just to monitor though. This isjust going to take time.
I tried the squirt bottle on my aggressive male. My cat was so "into the hunt" that he just ignored me when I squirted him with water.
My cats finally started getting along this week after 4 months of fighting when together. I tried slow introduction with scents and stuff and after awhile let them meet but once in same room they fought.
Yr old spayed female I already had was stressed out growling and annoyed by the male kitten. They woiuld go to their alternate corners but didn't take long to start fighting again. I did the squirt bottle and just got wet floors.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com It takes time and short times together then longer and longer. This is my first week I been able to keep doors to the rooms all open so both cats have access to whole house. They been mostly separated all this time.
Also its been a month since the boy got fixed so maybe too hes gotten his feelings out of his system.
good luck. I am finally NOT regretting getting the kitten. Its nice having two cats that can get a long for more than 5 minutes lol
Be careful with the squirt bottle. Your male could start associating your female with the unpleasantness of being squirted, and that could prevent them from ever getting along. He might also start avoiding you. Another unintended side effect is that he could end up even more difficult to bathe, should the day ever come when you need to give him a bath.
Cats largely have to work out their hierarchy issues on their own, and there will be wrestling and chasing involved. You can facilitate a more pleasant relationship by playing with each of them while the other is in the room. Play with them simultaneously when they get comfortable enough to be that near one another. Distraction is key. When they do get into wrestling matches, supervise. If claws come out with growling, separate - often coming close to them with a stern but fairly loud vocalization is enough - and distract them until they're calm again. Cats can get into some antics that look very aggressive but really won't do any harm. You need to learn where that line is with your cats. Additionally, keeping their claws trimmed will help prevent accidental injury.
Im in the same position as you are, but the other way around, my female cat hiss and attacks at my male cat. So far the only way I do it is to isolate the male cat in 1 room. I rub old towels in both the cats to get the scent, switch the towels leaving it on the floor so they can both "smell" each other. I leave the door 2 inches open so they can partially interact at times when I am away. I will try switching the room isolation now if I can get my male cat under the bed. Its a slow process, but I have been reading around and this is a best way to make them get along.
