I have a outdoor cat .. he is 5 years old, hes wicked loveable everytime he comes home, i feed him and he goes right back outside sometimes .. or i feed him in my room and he'll sleep in my room for hours until he wants to go out .. but the thing i'm worried about is since the weather is getting really cold out, i'm afraid he has nowhere to sleep and he ends up getting really cold or if its raining out, what if he gets soaked and cold: \ i really love my outdoor cat and i worry alot. i wish he would stay inside but he doesn't like too at all. plus what i fear the most is what if he gets ran over one day and months will pass and i wouldn't know if he died or not: \ i wish he knew that if it was his time that he knew to come home before he did: (
If he is 5 and has been an outdoors cat that whole time, I am sure he has places to hid and go to if the weather gets nasty. It sounds like he comes home when he wants food, so I wouldn't be too worried. He may also have other families that feed him as well, so he should be fine!

If you put a collar on him, if something does happen to him, someone would be able to call you, or bring him home.
I would make sure your outdoor pet has, at the least his rabies shot. You don ' t want to risk his life or yours if he gets bitten by a contagious animal. Also, buy, make or build a shelter for your pet if he is to remain outside. Make sure that it is big enough for him to move around in, comfortable to sleep in and warm since the winter months are coming. Make sure you leave food and fresh water out for him in the event he doesn't come back for dinner or breakfast.
You have made it abundantltly clear that you know what the risks are to the cat being outside.
THEREFORE, you have two options.
1 - Keep the cats indoors
-------- OR ------------
2 - Stop worrying
I would build a house for him for the rainy days and I would give him his rabies shots.
My cat is an outdoor cat too. And i understand your worry. But no need, they can take care of themselves and as long as you've got food, he'll keep coming back!
my cat is the same, he is 3 years old he goes out and come back 2 days later. he will get all dirty and i would wash him up, he will eat and leave again. he would scratch on my bed room window when he wants to come in. i know what your going threw, it was raining today and cats have instinct and they do not like water and cold places. your cat will and should relies the weather is changing and would have no choice but to stay indoors. and about him getting hit by a car they only thing u can do is train him to stay inside or pray that he will be okay.:)
