my cats stare at EVERYTHING, they look around the ceiling all the time too, why?
Mine don't look at the ceiling, but then we've never had any problems with aliens.

In nature cats have many predators that would love to kill and eat them. So half of the reason they look everywhere is that they are instinctively watching out for animals and large birds that want to kill them. The second reason is that cats are animals that, in nature, kill and eat birds and small rodents in order to live. So they are also watching for things to eat.
They check the ceiling because it is just another part of their environment to watch for predators and food. And it is not a total waste of time ... cats can see small insects crawling on the ceiling, and they can hear sounds coming from above the ceiling, or sounds echoing off the ceiling.
