My family adopted a cat on Sunday. He is very cute, but he seems to "sneeze" and cough a great deal. Is it possible for the cat to have a cold? Any ideas or solutions to this problem would be appreciated. Thanks !
Yes, cats can get colds (fortunately, they can't catch them from humans and they can't give them to humans!). It's very common for cats in shelters or living around a lot of other cats to get colds, just like all the kids in a kindergarten class spread germs around.
A quick trip to the vet for some antivirals will clear his cold right up.
If you have other cats, keep them separated from the new guy until he's better. Otherwise, they could get colds too.
Cats can get colds but it isn't common. The thing that most vets will ask about is if there is a lot of goopiness coming from there nose and eyes when they sneeze. Coughing on the other hand is a bit hard to weigh in on, some coughing is due to trying to purge hairballs, but excessive coughing is not a very good sign.

No real solution that can be had here other than taking them to your local vet for a check-up, make sure it gets caught up on shots too.
Good Luck, hope this helps.
We have a beloved cat that does the same thing off and on. When he does, it seems like he has a cold, but when we took him to the vets, they both said he suffers from herpes. There is no cure for this lifelong condition for cats so we give him a medicine they prescribed whenever he has a "flare up." You can look online on how to treat and help your cat be more comfortable. If he gets red eyes, it is another sure sign.
Cats can catch colds yes, but usually don't stay for very long and i really think you should go get them vet checked just to make sure everything is their throat is working fine , my cat was doing the same and last about 3 days so i took her to the vet and apparently she had been eating something that stuck to her throat and needed to be removed.
Cats don't really cough so it might be because it is sensitive to something and cats always sneeze so i wouldn't worry about it too much. give it plenty of water in case it does have a cold or something. i would see at what place and near what people does your cat sneezes the most.

I'm pretty sure that cat's don't get colds - maybe he has allergies or is just trying to get used to his new surroundings? I wouldn't worry too much yet - When you take him to the vet for his shots you can ask about it.
Yes, cats can get "colds" (upper respiratory infections). They are usually caused by viruses which can't really be treated but secondary bacterial infections often develop and antibiotics are needed.
You should mention it at the cat's first vet check-up, which I hope is soon.
Maybe there is something in the house the cat is more sensitive to than your family is ... just a thought ....
