Kittens butt smells really bad!?

So i have a 2 kittens that were abandoned at my friends house and i took them in. I love the kittens to death but their butts smell really horrid. They are around probablly a month but i really don't know. I have no clue where they came from but what could i do to make them smell better.

btw i don't see them clean themselves and they are indoor outdoor cats so they use the litter box most the time
You may need to express their anal glands. And, yes, it is not advised to smell their bums.
If the kittens are only a month old they need special food. Kittens this age should still be feeding from mom. They need special kitten milk, until they are 6 weeks old when you can introduce special kitten food. Kittens under 6 MONTHS should not be allowed out the house.

Their butts are smelling bad because they are not getting the right food. Ideally, they need to be seen by a vet. Giving anything other than special milk to replace mom's milk at this age can kill the kittens, a slow, painful death. The fact that they are smelling means something is going horribly wrong. Please try to get them to a vet. Within a few weeks, if they survive, they will need de-worming and de-flea-ing, and the vet can advise about that as well.

Cats learn to clean themselves from their mom, but these cats have been removed from her before they learned how to clean themselves. Try one of those mitts for stroking pets. If you stroke them with the rough mitt, they may just take the hint and start to clean in the same places.
First of all, why are you smelling a kitten's butt? I think that's where your first problem is. Also, that's where they poop out of, and poop doesn't smell too good either , so that's probably why it smells.

Maybe you're feeding them food that their bodies don't agree with and therefore they have diarrhea?

Or maybe they have worms?

It's kind of unlikely that they have something wrong with them, considering this is both kittens you're talking about, so I'd say just stop sniffing their butts.
Hahaha! Funnily enough, I was just thinking about the same thing ! I didn't smell my kitten's butt on purpose. He was climbing all over me and his butt was right next to my face!

I think it is due to the food they eat; I read somewhere that some food makes their poo smells really bad hence why they have to learn to cover their poo with litter. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

Maybe your cats are too young and didn't learn how to clean themselves from their mother? You have to clean them and make sure they are somewhat paying attention to what you are doing in order for them to learn.
Cats have 2 scent gland around the anus and these sometime need to be expressed by either you vet or a groomer. These glands are used when your cat has a bowel movement coating the stool in a scent like marking its territory. These glands are also used similarly to a skunk when they are frightened or shocked, could it be something to do with their ordeal, are they got a scared temperament?

I'd go to the vets and see if the glands need expressing

If they are about a month old THEY SHOULD NOT BE GOING OUT DOORS TO BEGIN WITH. They still need to be fed kitten milk. Kittens are not weaned until they are 8 weeks old. It's more than likely they have some kind of worms that need to be gotten rid of. Call the vet and get some dewormer for them
I'd advise not to sniff the kittens' butt and to maybe give them a bath. I am pretty sure all beings' butts smell really bad, so maybe it's just because you are smelling it.
how do you expect them to smell? of roses ?????????? pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

why are you smelling their bums in the first place? bestiality is against the law.
Okay, so, cover your kittens butts in whipped cream.
Then don't smell their butts, and you won't have any problems!:)
Get a warm wash rag and wipe their bums.
?) Take the kitten to a veterinarian to make sure no medical intervention is needed. Whether the baby kitten was abandoned, or the mother died, it is imperative that you get the kitten to a doctor so that it can be examined for problems such as dehydration. If the veterinarian approves, take the kitten home.

Set up a bed for the kitten using a cardboard box, old towels and a heating pad. Wrap the heating pad in a towel or two and place it in the bottom of a cardboard box. Bunch up another towel or rag, and place it in a corner for a bed. You may also want to consider putting a stuffed animal in the box for the kitten to cuddle with, as they are used to being close to other kittens or their mother. Place the heating pad on low, as newborn kittens are not able to regulate their temperature until around 8 weeks of age.

Feed the baby kitten using a small bottle designed to feed orphaned kittens, and some kitten formula or replacement milk. These can be found at any pet store and also at stores like Wal-Mart. Sterilize the bottle, and then fill it with the replacement milk. The instructions on the back of the can will tell you how much to feed a kitten of a certain age, and no mixing or adding of water is needed. If the kitten refuses to drink out of the bottle, you can use an eye dropper to slowly drip the milk into the kitten's mouth.
