My mom and i live across the street and a couple houses down from one another. We both have kittens (they are siblings) and they really like being together. We both have mouse problems so we want to have the kittens for both houses. How do you teach cats that they have two homes? Right now we are just bringing them back and forth. They are still pretty little and wouldn't be able to find their way across the street yet. Should I just continue bringing them back and forth ? Or is there a better way?
I think you and your mom need to decide which kitten lives at each home. Cats rarely form an emotional bond even to siblings. So separating them really is not an issue. Since you both have mice problems, it would be advantageous to always have a cat at both homes. A friend of mine "borrowed" one my my cats to help with a mouse problem. We think he caught and killed one mouse, but as soon as he was no longer in the house, the mice returned. Mice will tend to not enter a home if they smell a cat.
Bad idea to teach them to go between houses since you are on opposite sides of the street. Keep them at your house for a few days or weeks, then at your mom's for a similar amount of time. Carry them or walk them on leashes to make sure they don't get hit by cars or get lost.
