Depends where you get it. A reputable rescue will charge $ 50-125 to adopt a kitten which will have shots and be spayed/neutered. If you get a "free" kitten these things can go probably $ 100-300 for shots and spay/neuter. The other things are fairly cheap. I but a cheap litter box around $ 5 and fill with cheap scoopable litter that runs around $ 7.49 for 40 pounds. I buy good quality food (Taste of the Wild) which is $ 9.95 for 5 pounds. It's a great idea to feed canned as well. I buy Felidae which comes in $ 1.39 for 13 ounce cans where I live. We use a couple of those a week.
So maybe $ 15/month on canned, $ 10/month dry, and $ 8/month on litter=$ 33 in monthly costs. That's when the kitten is healthy and doesn't need any extra vet visits:)
Around $ 25 to adopt an abandoned kitten. Maybe $ 75 - $ 125 for the equipment. If you adopt, the rescue organization (Humane Society, etc.) already took care of the shots, etc. They make sure the cat is healthy. They will also give you advice on cat care.

If you adopt a cat that's a teenager, so maybe 1 year old or so, then it's already housebroken. This will make your life much easier (and less messy!). And you'll still have a very playful cat around.
