Whenever I sit down somewhere for a while and then get up to get something, I can count on one of the cats taking over my "warm spot". I am merciless when it comes to my spot in front of the computer but usually will relinquish my spot on the couch.

Yes, they rule. I've even gone to bed when I didn't want to because the cat was sitting at the foot of the stairs meowing her head off that she wanted to go to bed.
Right now I have a new cat that I keep in the bedroom at night. I let him out about 1 am when he starts crying. It's like having to get up and feed a baby! LOL.
My cats enjoy thumpings - I have no idea why. Both cats will pester my son until he starts wailing away at them. The cats grab on to his free arm (claws in) and just lay there looking into his eyes as he beats on the cats rib cage with the flat of his hand. Then the cat releases it's grip and leaves - gets a drink - and comes back for a second go at it.
The cats used to think they rules this house until we got the dog. The dog loves 'correcting' errant cats. Since we got the dog the cats no longer enter our sleeping areas and they never get up on the counters. And their weekly dominance fights have been curtailed too.

LOL. I don't know if I would consider it a "fight" but whenever I get up and one of my two cats takes over the "warm spot", I just shoo them back out of it when I come back. Often, I'll pick whoever tried to take over up and sit down and put them on my lap instead, so it's still warm AND they get to be pet.
I rule them! Don't bite the hand that feeds you! I know sometimes you feel like giving way - bed spot, couch spot or walkway. I do let them have their on way if they came from the vet or are not feeling well but on a regular day, show them whose the boss so they will follow you.
When my cat is sitting where I want to sit I pick her up and hold her while i sit down then put her on my lap. I am stroking her fur the whole time, petting her and talking softly to her. She doesn't seem to mind when I do this.
We both win. She gets a nice warm lap to lay in and I get my seat.
If they are in my seat and I need it I move them. Do I fight with my cats???? NO! They like the warmth and your scent where you were sitting, that is why they lay there. You should be happy about that if they didn't like you they would not get near your scent.
