There is a cat who has been hanging around our house lately.
For years, I've noticed him/her in the neighborhood ...... thought it was someone's outdoor cat. I have two dogs who have occasionally chased it out of the backyard and into the storm well. Now, all of a sudden, this cat is hanging out on the front porch, walks by the windows even though the dogs bark incessantly at it, climbs on the roof, walks right up to my kids, walks between their legs.
He/she used to run and hide, but now all of a sudden lets us pet him, pick him up ....... but she won't leave; meowing, walking around the porch.
We have not fed him/her at all. Why is this cat behaving like this with dogs barking and no food as enticement?
Be careful with this cat. Two explanations come to mind:
1. It has something to do with coming winter and him/her being hungry, deprived of attention in his home (maybe he was rejected)
2. It can get rabies if the cat does not have anybody to take him to the vet for his annual shot.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com It might not bite (not all rabid animals are violent) but its saliva can be infected.
I certainly hope that it's not second case!!!
Be extra careful with shy animals who suddenly turn social.
You also don't know how he behaves with other neighbors - maybe he go to them in the same manner looking for new home
Perhaps he/she has chosen your family to be her new owners. Has anyone talked of owning a cat since always around maybe you should take it in. Put up some posters of found cat and your number and see if the owner comes.
She likes you. You've been adopted, and your dogs have adapted. If they were serious there would be serious chases going on in your yard.
