Main coon mix cat first encounter with other cat?

I brought home a main coon cat mix from the humane society yesterday. He is estimated to be 2 or 3 years old. He is very friendly, and loves to be pet. He seems to be a little overwhelmed by my house, yet he still tries (and succeeds) to get out of my room. Tonight I let him explore a little, and he encountered my cat. He seemed to just be curious, but my 4 year old american long hair was very spooked. He ran, and Sebbie , the new cat, followed him. My older cat ran under a bed, and the new cat was trying to find him. The old cat kept hissing (more frightened then angry) and suddenly, Sebbie made a strange clicking noise with his mouth. It almost seemed like he was going to throw up, but he didn't. I carefully picked up Sebbie and brought him back to my room. (The reason I took slower to do this, was because I didn't want to scare Sebbie under the bed. What's going on? How do I get my old cat to not be frightened by my new cat?
Maine Coon Mix? American Longhair? No such things. You mean domestic longhair - cats of no particular breed. Breeders of pedigreed cats tend to sell kittens altered so "mixes" just don't happen. And there's no "American Longhair" only American Shorthair.

You should never just thrust cats together. You should keep the new cat in a separate room with its own food, water and litter for at least a few days. Didn't the shelter tell you how to properly introduce cats? Here's some more info http://www.our-happy-cat.com/introducing ...
Just give him some time. After all, until you brought the new kitty into your home, he was the undisputed champion. And when he ran, it set off the chase response.

That is not exactly how I would have done the introductions. Normally, bring in the newcomer in its carrier, and let the resident cat check out the new cat. Sure, you will get some hissing and growling, as that is common. But it allows the resident cat to see what is happening while the new cat is confined. Then there are two approaches as to how to proceed.

Give generous doses of love to both, and realize that it will take some time for a new arrangement to be set up. There can only be one alpha kitty in a household, so that will need some sorting out.
