Cat diabetes question?

Went to the vet today. He told my cat has diabetes and needs insulin. I have 2 questions ....

1. What brand of cat food should I buy?

2. Should I buy insulin from petmeds dot com?
Feed a high quality canned food. Grain free is best. Wellness CORE, Felidae grain free, Innova EVO are a few grain free options. You can price out the insulin. I found 1800petmeds wasn't much cheaper than my vet unless they were having a sale. If you use an insulin that's used in humans you can also check out the usual pharmacies that we use. Good luck!
Your vet can recommend a food but high protein, low carbs.

it depends in petmeds is the cheapest place .. I suspect you could probably get it cheaper at Walmart though since it's a common human med too. or CVS pharmacy .. places like that. And honestly unless you talk to the vet beforehand often times they wont even authorize petmeds. the website has to call the vet before they ship anything and the vet will often just say nope. It's not really worth the hassle IMO
Price the insulin locall first, you can call WalMart, Walgreens and any other pharmacy and ask. Also do that for the syringe prices, we got 100 to the box at WalMart for $ 16, it kept the price down. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

As for the food, there's a good comparison guide over on this site - broken down by canned and dry foods. Look for low fat, low carb, high protein.

The charts are the first ones in blue.

We fed ours Fancy Feast 'feasts' without the gravy, and also Royal Canin Siamese 38 since he was allergic to the Royal Canin Diabetic Management. The Purina Diabetic Management is ok too, but really cats who are diabetic need low carb so sticking to a canned diet is better. Ours also got some raw ground chicken daily, and baked chicken when we had that available. He was pretty stable on that, and was on 2 units of Lantus twice a day.

The Lantus is good for FAR longer than the 28 days they say. Human use requires a short timespan, but our pharmacist says it's good for up to 6 months with no loss of strength IF it's refrigerated and not shaken to cause bubbles inside (you roll the tube to mix it not shake it, if it's shaken it breaks the suspension). Make real sure to feed the cat food at the time of the shot, they need something in their stomach for the insulin to work right. Eating 10-15 minutes before the shot is good. Never give it to them without food being ingested at the time of the shot.
A high protein all wet diet.
