What to do about my cat when I go to college?
So I've had this cat for going on 9 years and he is my shadow. He is indoors but the moment I get home he follows me, sleeps right next to me every night, and I like the cat a lot. He doesn't like anyone else in my house and doesn't let them touch him. I'm going to be going to college next fall and I only plan to visit home one or two weekends a month. What will I do? I know he'll miss me, my mom says he wanders the house and then "cries" (meows) in my room when I spend the night at my friend's house. I can't bring him with me, I'm going to live in a dorm...
tbh a lot of people have pets in there dorms even though it's not allowed lol see if your roomate is cool with it
youll have to give him to a new loving family
Thats a difficult one.

I would say leave him at home with things that belong to and smell of you. you could call him every day and leave an answer phone message that could be played to him.

If your mom and other house family members give your kitty love and take care of him while you are away, he will be fine. It will take some time for him to get used to you being gone, but he will be okay. I do not agree with just giving your cat away or dumping him off at the shelter just because you won't be there. He will be okay to remain in your home and taken care of by your other family members. Your kitty will be very happy to see you when you come home one or two weekends a month. Best of luck.

I experienced the same thing when I went away to college 10 years ago. My kitty was fine.
DO NOT GIVE HIM AWAY! that will probably hurt you as well as the cat a lot. If you have had him or her for over 9 years, chances are they are elderly and will not be adopted, leaving the people at the shelter only one choice... He or she will get used to you not being around as much, so just visit him or her whenever you can :) giving him or her away will really hurt your cats feelings toward you.
