Two questions in one about my cat and dog?
I had two dogs, but I had to put one down. My other dog, Lucy, who was older was lonely and since I didn't have the time to train another puppy I got her a kitten. Lucy loves the cat, Monk and has made Monk her baby since day one. The problem is that Monk is now in heat for the first time. I was planning on getting her fixed over the Christmas break, but looks like plans have changed. She is the first female cat I have ever owned. She is pitiful(just like a woman with cramps). I was wondering if there was really anything that I could do for her to help her feel more comfortable? The other question is this. Lucy has always treated her like a baby. Bathes her, cuddles to her at night to keep her warm, etc. How do I keep Lucy from trying to clean that area, if there is even a way? All advice would be much appreciated. (Also, this is the first time I have had both a cat and a dog at the same time.)
Make a spay appointment for ten days from now, or once Monk starts cycling in and out of heat it can be hard to time the appointment. She's not in pain, just has an overwhelming urge to go out and mate. Unfortunately, there's not really anything you can do for her until it passes. It usually lasts 7-10 days or so. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

As far as Lucy not cleaning the area, I suppose you could spray Monk's privates with Bitter Apple spray. It's made to keep animals from licking sores and stuff, so it shouldn't cause any irritation.

Good luck to you!
Lucy and Monk seem like a good pair.

As for Monk's 'cramps,' I wouldn't worry if I were you. It's not so much that she's in pain, it's that she's feeling a rather desperate need to breed. I know she acts like she's hurting, but really it's just her hormones driving her crazy. There's nothing you can do, save make sure the house is calm, without any extra stimulants.

About Lucy cleaning her, I would let her be. It won't harm Lucy any more than it harms Monk to clean herself. It the idea bothers you, however, you could try buying the small diapers made for cats, dogs, and monkeys in heat. You may be able to find them at your local PETCO or at a well-stocked pet store.
