New kittens...Do we deworm them?
We just rescued two kittens that were 8 weeks old. They were extremely thin and loaded with fleas.
We started them on frontline right away, and the fleas seem to be gone. However, despite the fact that they do seem to be growing, one is extremely hungry all the time. Recently he started growling and fighting for the food with his sister. His belly does seem to be a bit bloated at times. Could this all be signs of tapeworm? Does D-Worm liquid work? We won't be able to get into the vet for almost another 2 weeks and I do not want this to go on for that long. Any suggestions.
need to have a vet test and see what it needs
If you explain the situation to your Vet, the office should take you in right away. If they don't, I would find a new Vet office. You do need to have them seen by a doctor.
You need to take them to the vet to be checked and given the appropriate meds. Don't use the OTC wormers - they either don't work or are too toxic.
I would make sure they gain some weight first before de-worming, you need a de-wormer that is safe for kittens but will get rid of the worms. growling/fighting over food is not a sign of tapeworms or any other disease, its normal if you have taken in 2 kittens that were starved. once they start getting fed regularly and realize they are getting all they need then the fighting should stop, until then feed them from seperate dishes about a foot apart or so. watch for constipation with the bloated belly if you are feeding hard food. if they have tapeworms you will see small segments that look like white grains of rice in their stool or in the fur by their rear ends, some may even be moving if they are fresh. i would call your vet office and explain the rescue situation to see if you cant get in earlier.
It was nice that you rescued them, but your not a vet. any number of things could be wrong with them, maybe even serious, but hopefully not. taking care of an animal should not be guess work, if you use the wrong medication, and apply the wrong creams etc..it could and probably will result in a allergic reaction or even death
