Floor Shitting - Direct nose towards mess, about 1 inch away, keep face in that direction and at that distance for at least 5 seconds.

Furniture Ripping - Keep a small bottle of water with a spray nozzle. You get the idea.

Attacking Guests/Family - Again, water bottle. EDIT: Or put it in a closed-off area, like a bathroom with the door closed. (If it's attacking people, you should probably remind them regularly that there is a cat that will claw their genitals in half if they try to use that bathroom)

If none of this works, give it a bath, it might hate you for a while after you give it a bath, but it will learn it's lesson and then it will also be clean.

If you did this a couple of times, he cat will learn real fast. Cats hate water.

If you discipline a cat after the fact, they will not understand why they are getting punished, esp since their brains are small.

Really the discipline really depends on the behavior. What seems like a bad behavior could actually be a plea for help, so I would hesitate telling anyone what to do without knowing the problem behavior. Before I resort to any type of discipline I try to get into the mind of the cat. I try to understand what may be causing the problem.

For example, every morning I'd find the toilet paper shredded. I couldn't figure out why this was happening, but I knew which cat was doing it. Finally I figured it out. My cat was getting hungry at 5:00 am, but not finding any food in her bowl she decided to shred the toilet paper. This was her way of communicating her displeasure (or maybe she was trying to eat it--who knows). I got my cats an automatic feeder that dispenses food three times a day and the problem was solved. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

Also, impossible to discipline cats for something that was done in the past and that you didn't catch them in the act of doing. They won't know why you are being "mean" to them. Just let it go and try to be there the next time it happens. As in the above examples cats might misbehave on schedule. Just like us they have their routines.

Never hit a cat or yell loudly at them. They will just be afraid of you.

But here are the disciplines I have used:

Getting on the table or kitchen counters or scratching furniture: spray with the stream setting of the spritzer bottle and say a very firm "NO!" simultaneously. If you keep this up eventually you can just say "NO!" and they will know to not do it, which is ideal because who wants to have to mop up water all the time. Some cats don't mind water as much, so if this doesn't work you will have to try something else.

As for furniture scratching. Make sure to supply lots of things they can scratch in lieu of furniture. I know there are products (including catnip) on the market that can attract your cat to desired scratching or rubbing surfaces as there are things to put over chairs to protect the fabric from them scratching. In my experience, cats tend to like tapestry and textiles and soft wood such as pine to scratch. My cats never go after hardwoods, so I am committed to only having hardwood furnishings. This will take some time to accumulate, but I don't mind. I'd rather have happy cats than neurotic, perpetually disciplined animals. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

Cats that are moody and irritable and who take it out on their other feline household members benefit from Feliway. You can google it. It's worked for me.

I would get a copy of the book Twisted Whiskers. The author of that book has so many great ideas. It's been a great resource for me.

Also talk to your vet. They might have some ideas.
