Any particular cats meant for first time owners?
So I've only ever owned dogs my whole life. This may sound like a stupid question but I'm not around cats too much. Are their specific breeds that are better for first time owners? Of course if I were to ever get one, I'd adopt it. Just curious. :)
well not really all cats are basically a like and if you see a cat that you like at the shelter and you have a connection with it thats the cat you take.

You'd probably do better adopting an older cat. Kittens can be really trying and should always be adopted in pairs for proper social development. Talk to the shelter workers about what you have in mind for a relationship with your cat. They can usually point you towards the cuddlers, the "cool" cats, and the loners. Be sure to mention you have dogs. They can show you cats who are dog tolerant. Hang out with a few cats and get to know them. Don't be surprised when a cat picks you. It usually happens that way. Best of luck finding a new kitty pal!
Well over 97% of cats aren't a particular breed. And with over 99.9% of the cats in shelters no particular breed - don't focus on a breed if you intend to adopt.

Just go to a shelter and choose the cat that picks YOU. An adult cat would be a far better choice for you than a kitten since the personality is right there before you. Adult cats are also much less hyper. They won't be biting and scratching you and waking you at all hours of the night. They're also perfectly content to sleep the day away while you're at work while kittens can get pretty lonely.
