How do I care for a 6 week old kitten?

How do I care for a 6 week old kitten?
At least I'm assuming that he's about 6 weeks because at a trip to the vet 2 weeks ago she said he was about a month old then, so add 2 weeks and you get 6 weeks.

Anyway, I gave him the formula as the vet directed, but she also advised that I eventually I'd have to wean him, which is what I'm trying to do. Is canned food better than dry food? How do I potty train him? Can he be left alone for long periods of time? How often should he be fed? How do I bond with him? I've never had to keep a cat before and he should still be with his mother at this age but he was abandoned. Any help is welcome.
Since he is only six weeks old i would wait till wean him for another week but start by using a bottle and then put some milk in a bolw and dip his face in it till he starts drinking it himself once you dip his face in it he will lick his lips and clean the milk off and then he will want more and will eventually drink it by himself]

Is canned food better than dry food?
Wet food is best at first. It's much easier for a kitten to chew it and ge it down. Continue with the milk for another week or so, but slowly introduce him to the wet food. You could also mix some of the milk with the wet food to start.

How do I potty train him?
Cats want to dig when they go to the bathroom. Just put him in the litterbox and once he sees that he can dig, he'll go. Once you have the litterbox in one area, don't move it aound. He needs to remember where it is.

Can he be left alone for long periods of time?
He should be okay for a few hours. But try to be around as much as possible for the next couple of weeks. He's a kitten, he's going to get into trouble :)

How often should he be fed?
After the milk, he should be given wet food throughout the day. You can split a can into 3 to 5 little meals a day. He should be fed as much as he'll eat for now.

How do I bond with him?
Just be with him. Call him by his name a lot, so he gets to know it. Play with him A LOT. At this stage, he's going to be all about you. He may follow you around, and want to just be i your face all the time. He wants to completley understand you, and vice versa.

He'll be a bit sloppy until his cleanig instincts kick in. Try not to bathe him too much, kittens get cold very easily. Get a cat brush and brush his coat. This will encourage him to groom himself. And it's alright if his butt is dry. As long as he's going to the bathroom without diarrhea or blood..he's fine.

Just think of him a your baby, because right now, you are certainly his mom.
Good luck and have fun!
At 6 weeks, your kitten should be ready to start eating kitten food. Always introduce a dry good quality kitten food. Sometimes you can mix a bit of moist in it to get him more interested, but try it without first. Leave the kitten with fresh water and kitten food at all times. IMO dry food is better because it helps with tartar buildup on the teeth. My vet told me to always give a teaspoon of wet food at each meal. It helps prevent urinary tract infections.

Cats have very good instincts, and are very quick to learn the litter box. Put him in and see what he does. I sometimes manipulate their front legs to scratch. They quickly get the hang of it. If your kitten has pooped elsewhere, put it in the litter box so he can smell it and associate the poop with the litter box. I wouldn't be concerned about your kitten having a bit of a dirty bottom unless it is diarrhea. Take a moist cloth and gently wipe him.

Bonding is easy. Cuddle him and interact with him such as playing with strings and feathers. Don't worry about being gone for long periods, cats are very independent. Enjoy your new kitten!

PS make sure you get him neutered as soon as he is old enough or he will start spraying.

Ok so when your kitten is being weaned, it all depends on what kind of food it wants. My cat only wanted hard food, and he HATED wet cat food.Let him choose what he wants. To potty train, or litter box train :), you put their dropping in the litter box and that is where they will always want to go there.M y cat loved attention, and i was going to school every day, so some separation wont be that bad, The cat can't even tell if your gone for an hour or a year! Your cat should be fed two to three times a day. To bond with your cat, spend time with it. My cat Walt loves to sit in the beds of trucks with me or he even likes it when we sit on the porch and just goof around. You shouldn't be very concerned, just give him a bath like i did with my cat. M y cat LOOOOVED it.
