Should I be worried that my cat eats mice?
My two-year old male cat that I adopted from a shelter, though being a strictly indoor pet, has been killing mice around the house (it's a large Victorian by fields and ponds so it attracts all sorts of animals from outside). He doesn't just play with them. He downright chomps them down, so I always end up finding halves of mice and little disgusting leftover mouse body parts on the floor. He's already been dewormed because he got worms once from eating a mouse, but I'm getting more and more worried as he's a fantastic mouser and keeps hunting them down. I can't help but think about rabies (but he's had his shots), more worms, parasites .... I don't even know what else!! What should I do???? I've already hired pest control and it's not like the mice are running rampant, but he knows exactly where and when to find them and I can never stop him from finding the stray rodent ... Any suggestions would be helpful.

The only thing that you have to worry about with your cat cleaning up mice is cleaning up the mouse carcass. Also, make sure that your cat doesn't eat rats, because your cat CAN get rabies from a rat.

Cats get Coccidia from eating mice. So you're right to think about parasites. So keep an eye out for any diahrrea or vomiting and head to the vet if you spot any. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com
When the exterminator comes can you ask them to point out any openings where the mice might be coming in and try to cover those to keep the mice out? Can you get one of those devices that emits a sound that repels pests but is safe for pets? Your vet might have more suggestions or the vet might have an idea of something safe to give your cat when you've found he has eaten a mouse.

Add - Just remembered ... Put him on REvolution. It's a monthly flea/heartworm/tick preventive that does a pretty good job at warding off other parasites such as roundworm (which cats also get from mice and I forgot that. sorry). Not sure if it has an effect on coccidia. But the Revolution might be worth a look.

Most mice, have parasites on them as well as in them. If your cat eats mice, it's a better than good chance the parasites will be transferred to your cat.

Of the internal parasites the mouse may have are hook and round worm. External parasites, like fleas, can have tapeworm eggs in them and if eaten, you cat has a great chance of getting tapeworm. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

Now, will your cat automatically get these? Good question, but make sure your vet does a fecal test the next time you take him in for his six month checkup just to be safe.

A healthy cat, that also eats healthy will most of the time show on obvious signs of an infestation. This is why you need to them a fecal test at least once a year.

Hope this helps,

my cat too does that and she loves to use her hunting skills, according to me it is the nature of cats to do that. as u know cats and lions are from the same family so it is just the cats habits. i just let her enjoy her hunting.
