How to train my parakeet to like me?
We got him about 4 months ago. He is always chirping happily inside his cage. I want to have him on my shoulder, or hold him on my finger but I am not sure how. I am willing to devote my whole summer to training him. Can someone please give me tips on how?
answer:
try this (it's how i trained both of my parakeets) ;
hold your hand flat out in the cage with a bit of their favorite food (my birds love millet which you can buy at most pet stores) placed in your palm. it might take a few minuets but if you hold your hand still your bird will probably come and eat it. If it doesn't after a while trying holding it up close to the bird after it takes a bite pull the treat a little closer to your hand. eventually hold the treat out over you hand so that the parakeet must climb onto your hand to get it. If you do this over and over your bird will begin to associate you and you hand with the treat he loves and he'll get on your hand without the treat. the first few times he does this give him the treat as a reward. once he's gotten used to your hand he'll get curious about you and begin to climb up your arm and out of the cage. good luck :)
Well everyday you have your Parakeet you need to put your hand on/in the cage don't do A lot of movement just to get the bird use to your smell and your hand then after a few days of that you can place your finger under the chest of the bird & then it should hop up on your finger or if you'd like to hold the bird you can grab them from the back but remember since birds are so small they don't like to be approached so let them know you are there by whistling or saying hey pretty bird...or something along the lines of that...then once the bird has gotten to know you more & more you become associated the bird will start to create a bond with you as long as you give them attention each day & hint hint! male birds are for some reason more easy to train & get friendly then female!! Hope this helps and i hope you & your bird(s) create a friendly bond (:

Hmm... i find birds like that are attached to one person in particular.. i would place feed in your hand and see if there's any fear in approach and then gently move to touch. also crooning whistles work too, i wolf whistle and my girlfriends bird knows its me. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

Its a kind of get bitten and get passed it type of thing.
