What type of string should I use for bird toys?
I'm putting a couple parts to my parakeet's old toys together to make some new toys, but I don't have enough string/rope, he has chewed it to pieces!
Would nylon work? Or should I go with cotton? Hemp?
Help:)
answer: ADDED INFO: I have to respectfully disagree w the idea of animal fat toys for caged birds. Fat (of any kind) and feathers don't mix. It will get onto the beaks & feet and end up on the toys, bars, food cups, perches. Unless you enjoy degreasing the cage and everything in it regularly I wouldn't make such items. Sisal is the way to go. I don't recommend nylon because of the serious damage it can cause if it gets wrapped around a toe, foot, whatever. A bird will chew their toe or even a foot off to escape nylon (I ended up w a 7-toed yellow-collared macaw this way). Of course, you have to keep an eye on the materials that are considered safer as well. Good luck.

cotton or thin rope should be ok
a good inda for enrichment for birds is ...
get a plastic cut , and punch a small hole in the bottom of the cup, get some string or rope and put the string through the hole and not it at the bottom ( so the string goes up through the cup) , melt some fat/lard and mix it with some bird seed, put this seed mix into the cup and let it set in the fridge for a day, this will then go hard , cut the plastic cup of it and then hang it in their cage , birds love this and you can be inventive with wit

also birds like is get a small peice of wood , cover it in honey and then dip it in bird seed :)

Go with the one that they won't chew through. I suggest nylon. They can chew it, but it won't break. Any string will suffice, but for you, use something tough
