Is my budgie hen eating her eggs?
I have a budgie pair that laid there 1st egg a week ago then threw it out of the nest the nest day. I thought she hadn't laid since but becuase she was staying in the nest every night and day I inspected the nest and found what looked as if it could have been a scrap of old egg shell or it could have been some of there soft food. Becuase I wasn't sure I put 3 white marbles in her nest. she is sitting on them but over the last 2 days I have checked the nest regularly and there has been no sign of any eggs.
I'm not sure she was ever eating them now becuase there has never been any sign of egg yolk in the nest or on her face or on dads face? should I take the marbles out and see if she lays again or do you think she is just really good at cleaning up??
answer: Apple.............if I was you I would stop trying to breed this hen at this time. She obviously isnt up for it. Give her a 6 month break and try again later. Dont have her anywhere a nestbox is.
It is normal for any kind of egg laying animal to eat there eggs, to prevent this put some strong mustard or horseradish on a fresh egg she has produced put it back under her so when she eats it, it will not taste nice!!
Keep the marbles to distract her from continous egg laying, thus causing egg binding. The marbles may busy her enough to quit laying. In the meantime, if you don't want to reproduce, here are a few tips: change the toys around weekly to prevent boredome thus causing mating. If you can switch the water/food dishes around daily. Keep the water on opposite ends of food dishes to promote exercise. Leave music on when you are out. Give them foraging toys with millet & different treats inside to encourage behaviors found in the wild. Most of all take them out at least 1 hour a day. Break it up into 30 minute intervals if you need to. Go to cockatielcottage.com for homemade bread treats to make in a flash. Put the treats in boxes(toothpaste boxes, food boxes ect) and hang with string around the cage for instant toys. Good luck.
