Try singing or whistling a tune over and over. ANd with time he may pick up. I hear males are suppose to be very vocal.
Well, there are many explanations for this ... Do you have a mirror in his cage?
When the birds have mirrors their hormones start flooding and he will sing his "Mating call" to the other bird that he thinks is in the mirror. That might be why he only sings in the cage.
Also, do you spend a lot of time with him and sing to him constantly?
Birds (especially tiels) Need things repeated to them over and over. Don't do many things at once. His whistling ability will also get better in time. Just like human voices mature and get better in time, birds do to.
Also, not all tiels will sing. I've had two. One of my tiels hated whistling, and would only say words. My other bird doesn't say many words but whistles constantly! It's all in the birds personality. Another thing is , could it be a female? If theres a possibility in that, females do not sing usually. if they do its rare. They are the relatively quiet birds. Just try playing videos of other birds singing from youtube,. Pick a song or whistle you want your bird to copy and repeat it over and over and over everyday as much as possible! Repetition is key!:) I really hope i helped! Have fun with your tiel! I love mine!
My cockatiel whistled. And maybe a little chatter (bird noises) but it's not a singing bird. It's a parrot not a canary.
