I got two Parakeets about a month ago. Our neighbour was moving out and gave them to me. I named them Hades and Persephone. Hades is doing good but I keep having problems wit Persephone. She doesn't eat as much as Hades and she somehow always maneges to get hurt. Their cage is up to my belly Button, I'm 5'9 and they have plenty of room, the entire top comes off the cage so I let them fly around as they wish whenever I am in my room. But when we first brought Persephone to our place, she was bleeding all over, and We checked all over no sharp ends ETC, and she healed up just fine, Its her wing that always gets hurt, when It healed she lost a few feathers but was okay, and she flys way better than Hades, but it will brake open at random times. What should I do? Oh and she gets really hot and pants, the rubs her beak on the perch then puffs up for like five Min's at a time, We dont have the money to take her to ther vet. Is she okay? and what should I do? Any tips on how to tame and or make them more comfortable would help too!
The best thing to do is go to the vet. But, since that is not an option, I have an idea on what you can do. What it is, I do not know, though it sounds like a broken blood feather. Though, you can't to anything because we don't want to cause any more damage. Though, when it starts bleeding, remove her from the cage, wrap her in a towel, spread out the injured wing, and apply a thick layer or cornstarch to the bleeding area. This will stop the bleeding almost immediately. Though, when you have the money, I recommend that you take her to the vet because being so small, parakeets do not have very much blood in them.
Well, if she flies around and hurts herself you should REALLY clip her wings. I know it sounds against animal rights (believe me, I love animals), but my father had parakeets and they both died crashing into things. You just have to cut half of their 6 first feathers. And take her to the vet! The vet should know how to help!
Vet and blood test. It doesn't sound right that she will hurt herself so much that she will bleed.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com To tame them just spend more time with them, hang out, talk, let them get used to you. Feed them treats from your hand.
If u dont take the bird to the vet. She may die its hard to say but birds are highly prone to infections and diseases. u should split the birds up and have the injured one in a small cage with low perches in case of falling. make sure u offer fruits and vegies and keep her water very clean. as well if ur birds are split up and are not around each other they will start to bond to u. and become tame. birds are very social and if u have two together they will bond to one another and leave u on the side lines.
If you knew you had no money for a vet, then you should not have taken the bird. Don't mean to sound hateful but that is the truth. No one should have a pet of any kind if they are not prepared to care for it properly. The most likely thing is she is breaking blood feathers. That can be because of bad diet, not nearly enough space in the cage or any number of other issues. If the cage is not large enough for her to fully extend her wings and flap them without striking a perch or toy or anything else, then it's too small. You can do a search for "blood feathers" and find a ton of helpful information. But you also need to be prepared for vet visits so I suggest you start sitting a little money aside for that.
