I was looking at one of my female birds and her nose looks a bit weird. I thought it might be crusty but she is really showing no signs of sickness, etc. I found a picture similar to what it looks like on the net and I hear it's because they are ready to breed and mate. So my question from above ... Do Parakeets need to mate/breed in order to stay healthy and alive?
Now I'm wondering if I should go out and get a male bird. I have two female birds and if I get the male, should I get one or two? Will they likely to fight over the male?
Help please! I would call the vet but we have no bird vets in our area to call.
Of course they don't! Breeding actually shortens their lifespans instead. The brown cere is normal, it's just a cycle. Just because the cere is brown, it doesn't mean she's ready, or that she's even the right age. If you wanted to breed, you would not believe the cost!

And the list goes on and on. Plus, in the end, you might not even end up with any chicks to sell!
No they do not. I had a green parakeet for almost 9 years before he died, and he was an only bird on our house. Never had a mate, and he only had the people in our family to entertain him. As long as you interact with him, he will be just fine.
I now have a sun conure that will never have a mate (as in a bird mate) and he's just fine. Think about all the people who own parrots, and most own only one in their homes. As long as you interact with them and keep them a part of your family through interaction, your little parakeet will be just fine, I promise you.
No they do not need to mate.
If you have a friend already .... then you don't need another. Adding a male to two females probably isn't a good idea, especially if the two females are close.
Yes they do or atleast a little buddy or they will get lonley and stresses and damage there selves and they can end up killing there selves enless u spend evey minet with them and talk to it
