I have a parakeet that I have had for about 1 and 1/2 years. I think he is sort of lonely. Do you think it would be okay for me to get another bird so my parakeet won't be lonely? Or do you think that the bird I have now will respond negatively? Thank you!:)
You mean a budgie? I don't know much about other types of parakeets, but I have owned budgies for a while. I think you should definitely get your budgie a friend. Budgies may scuffle sometimes, but nothing serious. the only time i know of when a budgie gets really violent is when a hen (female) is fighting with another female over a nest or mate or anything to do with breeding . That shouldnt be a problem for you. you can get the same sex, or opposite sex, it doesnt really matter. if its opposite sex and you dont want them to have babies, make sure there is not a nest or nest box in the cage. a male and female budgie may bond and it would be very interesting to watch them cuddle and preen eachother. budgies are very social birds and should be kept in multiples if you are not prepared to give them lots of attention and be a part of their flock. to be on the safe side, if you are worried they may fight, you can put one in a seperate cage and place the cages by eachother untill they get used to eachother's presence. if you do this, pretty soon theyll probably be trying to get out of the cage to find their way to eachother! my budgies always do this. so, i say you should go for it! your budgie will be very grateful and you can watch them interact with each other.
Parakeets are pretty aggressive and dominant birds. Why don't you try giving it more time and attention and training tricks etc. What it wants is attention and stimulation and since it did not grow up with other birds it is up to you to provide this. This is your responsibility as a pet owner, for the next 15 years or so if you can keep the bird healthy.
i think it would be ok .. because i had 1 Indian ring-neck it was lonely just like your parakeet so we got a second and they are fine now ...
