Parakeet Mama & eggs question.....?
I have a parakeet that has laid 2 eggs, and she is sitting on them...does that mean that that's all she is going to lay? I heard they wait and lay all their eggs and then sit on them.
answer:
What you've heard is true, but not for all birds. Some wait for all the eggs to be laided, then sit on them, but others lay an egg and sit on it anyway, not waiting for the rest to be laided. Half my females that lay do that, so don't worry. What will happen is the baby's might have about one to three days difference between them when they hatch. Usally, everything goes fine, but sometimes (never happened to me) the older babies get all the food from the mother because the little ones can't stand up to them and get there mothers attention like the older ones. If this happens, witch is very unlikley, the baby birds crop (the area of skin witch is puffed up when fed) will be empty and if it stays like this, then you would have to handrasie it. Though this is very unlikley, leave the mother to do what she is doing so far, it works for my birds. Hope I helped.
Parakeets will sit/brood even when they still have more eggs to lay--they usually begin after the second or third egg. Read the first link below. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

If you have no male the eggs are infertile. You should take them from her and dispose of them because they cannot hatch.

You will need to watch her to make sure that she looks healthy and eats for a few days. Females occasionally become egg-bound (are unable to lay an egg that is inside them). If she stops eating and looks fluffed up, then take her to the vet.

Good luck with your bird.

Our zebra finches laid a few then more then more and were sitting on them in between. She laid about 30 eggs before she figured out that she had to sit on them for them to hatch. We started with 2 now we have seven cute little zebra finches.
I have white doves & the lay 2 at a time.
