Is it ok/safe to keep finches in the same room as a gas fire?

answer: I wouldn't. There is still some minimal fumes that would affect your birds. I even moved mine to a different room when I had a fire in my wood stove. They have such delicate respiratory system that it was never worth taking a chance with them.
I would say no. If there's a gas leak and you're out, your birds will probably die. If you want to keep them warm, buy a space heater. It uses less electricity (probably) and puts out heat more efficiently.
It will be much safer if the gas fireplace has an outside exhaust vent. If not check to see if one can be added.
