Is it legal to let pet birds fly free into the wild?
For Christmas I bought each of my kids an exotic looking pet bird. I couldn't afford the very expensive ones but bought some mid range birds. Since I am no bird person I can't tell you what type of birds they are. Some are gray with a little yellow while others have blues and reds mixed into their feathers. They have been very mellow for the most part and good birds. When they got the birds from Santa they had to promise they would respect their other brothers and sisters and take care of their own pet. So far that plan has failed and I am having to punish them. They knew from the beginning that the birds would be set free to fly back to the north pole if they didn't act right. Now I have to let the birds free. My question, will I get into trouble for letting the birds roam free. Years ago I got caught letting dogs go near a nature center. Is the same true for birds? Will they survive for a long period of time in the wild or do I need to leave their bucket of food with them?
no it's not pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com
they will not survive in the wild whether you leave food or not
take back to store
the birds would die if you let them go, its a sick thing to do to an animal. sell it or give it to a bird rescue centre
It is illegal. First, you are abandoning domesticated animals. Second, you are introducing a non-native species. There is this thing called rehoming where you can advertise in the local newspaper, petfinder, and craigslist that you are looking for a new home for the birds. Make sure the person is experienced with birds. Visit their home for an inspection. Then you can hand the pets over.
omg..you are thinking about letting them go!?!? you should never let a house pet go. those birds will never be able to survive alone. even if u did leave a bucket of food. those birds will get sick or die from other birds. if you don't want the birds any more call nature centers, or like pet stores, but dont put them in the wild!!!!!!
So in order to teach your children to be responsible human beings you are going to teach them that when you don't want an animal anymore it's ok to just let them loose, starve and freeze to death when you (as a parent) was the one to take responsibility for these animals by bringing them into your home? How is that teaching your children to be decent responsible human being or do you not care about that and your children are going to grow up to be as pathetic as you.
While I don't think most states have a law about this, I'm sure some do. If you leave a bucket of food outside for them, other birds will get it. Your pet birds would be too scared to get any food.

It's just a bad idea to to let them go, most would not make it in the wild. Their mothers teach them the ways of the world. And most never get to spend any time with their mothers after hatching. So they don't know who is friend or foe. They would not be able to handle the weather this time of year, after being in a nice warm home and then out in the cold winter air would kill them in no time. Then finding food this time of year would be almost impossible for a bird that didn't already know the lay of the land. It's hard enough to find food during the summer for some of them. They would not know what's good for them and what's not good for them. No ones ever taught them that. And is this what you really want to teach your kids. You don't want an animal any more, just throw him away.
The best way would be to find them a new home. You can use craigslist or Ebay classifieds, they both are free to use. This way you could get back part of your investment. You could also give them up to the local animal shelter. Or place an and in the local paper for a small fee, or just give them away.

Good Luck, I really hope you make the right choice on this one. The birds lives depend on you making the right choice.

PLEASE DO NOT LET YOUR BIRDS FREE!
I don't know if there are laws where you live, but your birds will be more then likely be dead half an hour after you let them go. The majority of escaped birds land in someones yard and get ripped up by a dog or cat, pecked apart by a larger bird or slowly starve to death.
Personally I think it was a very bad idea buying birds for your children if they are young enough to still believe in Santa, (let alone buying animals for christmas is a bad idea) especially if you don't even know what type of birds they are. What have you even been feeding them if you don't even know what their name is? I'm assuming these children are under the age of 10 since they still believe in Santa, which is a bit ridiculous to expect small children to be able to 100% take care of these birds. Why buy any animal at all for a young child if you don't expect to at least help the child take care of them?
