Help my Parrot won't stop bitting my buttons.?
My Parrot keeps bitting my buttons on my shirt and when I try and stop him he bites me. Any ideas to stop him from doing this?
answer:
Don't wear shirts with buttons when your parrot is with you, or cover your shirt so that the buttons are not available. To the parrot, the buttons are shiny toys. Do NOT ever tap or hit your bird; he doesn't understand why you're punishing him and you might lose his trust. And don't try to pry him away from the buttons--biting is how he tells you 'no'. It's better to prevent the situation in the first place.

Get some acceptable foot toys to hand your parrot or find another toy he can play with while he's on your hand. I've seen 'necklaces' that consist only of bird toys strung on a cord that you can wear around your neck, acceptable for your parrot to explore and nip. Or clip some clothespins to your clothing for Polly to chew on.
well as for why he is doing it he thinks your buttons are toys to be played with and when you try to stop him he is thinking that you want to play as well. now not knowing the parrot species I will suggest a group of ways to stop this behavior . one would be to offer him millet when out of the cage , or offer an acceptable toy for him to play with. another idea is to place him on the age or a stand and simply turn your back to him after telling him no when he starts doing this. and repeating every time he does this it won't take long and he will understand.

Its perfectly healthy for a bird to bite your buttons....just make sure they don't rip them off then you could be in a bit of trouble....if you don't like it then try to show your bird that it is not ok for it to bite your buttons like if every time you did it you tapped it on the head (lightly) and put it back in the cage and closed it for 10 mins....next time it is less likely to do it :)

You can make a shirt protector easily. Take a t shirt and put it over your buttoned shirt or Take an OLD full sized bath towel (if you live with your parents check with one of them first). Fold it in half lengthwise (so it is long and narrow). Measure down 10-12 inches from one end then cut a half circle on the folded edge that is at least 7 inches wide at its widest part and at least 7 inches long--put it over your head or try to to check for fit--do not enlarge more than 1 inch in either direction at a time. Wear it when you have your bird out. good luck with your bird.
