how do i find the owner of a white homing pigeon in californ

Depending on what the numbers are you would go to either:

AU - American Racing Pigeon Union http://www.pigeon.org and look for the band list. The numbers would read, eg,, AU 10 POM 0876 (National org., year hatched, local club, bird number). The AU will have a listing of the club secretary.

IF - International Fed. Of Homing Pigeon Fanciers http://www.ifpigeon.com Again look for their band list and secretary information for the particular club.

BTW and for the record, homing pigeons and racing pigeons are the same thing and most definitely are not extinct. What IS extinct is the the Passenger Pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius), a native species that used to exist in N. America
This makes me very sad.I used to raise homers, rollers and fantails and they are great animals. What would possess someone to just shoot and kill something for eating some grain? why is your grain out in the open where a pigeon can get to it anyway? if it is so accessible I doubt if the pigeon was causing much of a problem compared to the rodents that are in that grain all night long, let alone the many other animals getting into it.This bird could have come from any state, they can travel many miles. Some hobbyist somewhere could have very well just lost this bird. Many bands will have the state abbreviation on them as well as the year of the birds hatch and any club abbreviations such as american roller society, racing homer club etc .
the registry will have the owners address, if one exists for homers, would you like someone to shoot one of your racing birds? the one you destroyed is worth about 600 $! homers are extinct what you killed is a RACING pigeon it most likely was passing through on a 700 mile race maby more, maby less during WW 2 they flew from Europe to england with out stopping, top speed a little over 60 mph against the wind this grew to the sport of racing 99.99% of people around the world will NOT kill a pigeon now just how do you feel now you may of cost its owner a champion ship these birds are kept better care of than people keep there dogs or cat! you will have to find out were that bird either was launched from or headed to.it is your DUTY to that fine bird remember with out them Europe and maby the rest of us might not have our FREEDOM.check your history
Call a vet and ask them how to trace the numbers or google homing pigeons and see if they have some kind of registry.
WHAT !??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
