I already have a Quaker Parrot, Sid. Sadly, Sid has bonded with my mom, and wants to bite me and have nothing to do with me, and she lays eggs and
I've been considering a cockatiel for a long time now, and I fell in love at the bird shop (family owned bird shop ... not like pet co or petsmart)
OK, I'm only 13, and I have NO friends at all, I enjoy my time alone, but I am sad since I have no friends! I am being home schooled, so I'm not leaving the bird alone in my room all day ... I have non tamed parakeets and finches in my room, which will give company when I have ballroom dance and belly dance practice, or when I go out, like a Target or something
Also my tv is on during the day, preferably Sponge Bob ... but I mostly have it on teen nick ...
Will this little bundle of feathers give me a joy! I'm very mature and my mom has birds too!
It's not like a macaw or african grey (my mom has one, Petey!)
I remember how it was like when I was that age. Animals are really great for keeping company and acting as a support system. The world can be a terrible place, and kids are seriously mean (specifically girls).

Considering that you have finches and budgerigars already, I think that a cockatiel would make a great addition. (Plus, since your mom owns parrots, she could be a great help)
Cockatiels are sweet birds. They have really mellow personalities. Typically, if socialized enough, they won `t just bond to one person, but will bond with the entire family. (Though, I can understand if you want him to just be your own ).
They don `t need as much social time as conures or quakers, and they don` t scream like they do either.
I `m 18, and bought a cockatiel this year (I have two untamed budgies) and he has acted as such a great support system for me. Life is tough, and animals have the amazing power to give us the strength we need to move on.
He does the wolf whistle, says hello and whistles the Andy Griffith theme song.
They are relatively inexpensive and are really easy to take care of.
I would really recommend a cockatiel for you, and I wish you the best of luck in your teenage years!
Cockatiel is a great bird to have. But make sure u spend more time with it then the cockatiel spends with the untamed birds . any tamed bird can become untamed and vice versa.
I would have to answer yes out of personal experience we had a cockatiel once. and IT was a fabulouse bird but we could not have it for too long becuase it shistles loudly and we live in a semi. Which is comparable to an apartment. the walls are paper thin, So what we did was research birds on the net and at hte library and we decided on a parrotlet because tt would they are exactly like a parrot and fearless . Hint get a brave parrotlet if you do get one it won't be as flighty and it will play with you once it trusts you.

We got our parrotlet for hte exact same reson you want a bird. I home schooled my son through grade 5 and the bird was his class mate. They are to this day still great friends and very much attached. I would recomend a parrotlet to any one any day of ht eweek and I do know cockatiels are very similuar as far as being fum abnd [playful and allowing you to bond with them.
Our parrotlet plays starwars lego with my son he bring his ships and driods and lego action fugures to haer and she tweps away and breaks them apart and shoves them off of his bed. They still ahve good fun my son is now 12 he had the bird since he was 10 i think. so good choice for a classmate and for company. Trust me we know because we were in your exact same shoes. Best wishes dear lil home schooler. for your information Both my son and I miss those days. He thought he wanted to go back to school because mom is not so much fun as kids. Even though we tried to have friends over for him it is not an everyday 9 to 5 thing when you are home sschooling. But you might wnat to know he is now back at school HATING!!! it and wishing he was home schooled again. But I don't want to home school him now because he put me through alot when i did hom eschool him. SO off to school he goes even if it is with tears. SORRY i do love him but it is now a good thing to bounce back and forth so once a descision is made we should stick with it. Keep that in mind. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

Best wishes and all my love I hope it goes well for you.
Yes! Cockatiels are excellent pets for a girl your age! Are you looking for a quieter, more cuddly bird? Then get a female. Or a more independent, louder bird? Get a male.
Just make sure to NEVER let your other birds near your cockatiel. A bird could easily get very injured if that happens.
However, if you have allergies then steer clear of the cockatiel. Like their larger cousins, the cockatoos, they produce large amounts of dust that are terrible for anyone with allergies.
You seem very responsible and I am glad you have taken into account all the things birds need. It is a great idea that you're getting the bird from a family-owned shop, because most birds from large chain stores are untamed and unhealthy.
