Hi, the doves around my house have recently been making a lot of nests and laying eggs but today I noticed one dove didn't come to her nest all day. I don't know what happened to her but I brought the egg inside and was holding it in my hand to try use my body heat to keep it warm. When I went to have dinner i rapped it in a towell and it is still in it right now. It was a rainy day today so it wasn't very warm and when I shine a light on the egg I can't see anything inside. Is it even worth looking after?
As soon as you have touched the egg the egg will not be in any interest of the mother anymore.
And the fact that the dove abandoned the egg for a whole day indicates that the egg is probably dead, and the dove did no longer see the need in protecting the nest any longer.
An easy way to check an egg for life is to shine a bright light through the egg, if the egg isn't showing anything interesting after 3 days the egg is probably dead, which is most likely the case.
But there's no harm in trying.:)

Best of luck, Nate.
I dont think so put it back in the nest and if its alive the mom MAY come back or may not, doves roost near the nest and often rarely return, i would put the egg back and quit screwin with it unless you wana buy an incubator ... life aint like the movie were that girl put goos eggs in her underwere drawer ... IT IS A MYTH THAT THE MOTHER WILL NOT TAKE BACK THE EGG IF IT IS TOUCHED! ive don it like 10 times, even picked up the fluffy baby doves, use to be obbsessed with doves and climb trees and watch them be born and what not ...
I think it would be worth a try. (:
