The best thing you can do to learn is to join a pigeon club in your area. If that is not practical go to the library and get some books on pigeon raising.Pigeons are like parrots; the care is general for all types with a few exceptions. Places like Barnes and Noble also sell books. Also google Foy's pigeon supplies. They sell many supplies. Also try Agway, Tractor Supply and good feed stores. You need to learn the basics or you will end up with a disaster.

Yes pigeons can get mites. They are usually treated with Sevin dust-just exactly like a farmer would do it. You treat them because mites can ruin feathers, Cause intense itching and bother the skin of the bird. If they get bad enough they can cause weakness in your birds. That's why you don't ignore small problems before they get out of control. I am not familiar with scaley mites on pigeons. My husband's birds never got them. The best preventatives are to start out with healthy birds, Quarantine new birds from your healthy ones for a few weeks and feed your birds well with quality feed, provide PIGEON grit and KEEP YOUR COOP CLEAN AND DRY. The Caps are for emphasis.
