I just bought my first bird, an african Grey .. The store sent me home with a seed mixture. I asked about nutri-berries and was told that i should only giver her about 5 or 6 nutriberries as a treat. But after reading the nutriberries package it tells me that i should eventually replace the seed mixture completely with nutri-berries because they are better than seeds. Can someone tell me if that is true, they seem to be better than just seeds. And my Bird seems to love them
I of course have a separate bowl for fruits and vegetables, and also throw in some peanuts with the seed which she loves as well.
What should I do
it's ok they also are balanced with omega 3 -6, but seeds must be given as fresh fruit and vegetable, they need fresh food for healty and natural defence

nutriberries are fine but are not a complete diet and should not be the bulk of the daily food intake
until it's proven that an all processed pellet diet is the best I prefer to feed of the total daily food intake 1/3 pellets, 1/3 healthy 'people' foods, 1/3 quality seed mix

so you could use the nutriberries for the 1/3 quality seed mix each day
seed mix being the bulk of the daily food intake is very bad and lead rapidly to obesity, fatter liver disease, and lacks nutrients such as vitamin A, other vitamins and most all minerals
unitl you learn more and can make up your own mind after a couple years of being in the bird world and reading, talking face to face with other parrot owners do 1/3 pellets, 1/3 people food, 1/3 seed mix as 100% of your grey's daily food intake
don't fall for the all you need is pellets or all you need is seed mix, they need it all
I have had birds for over 30 years and just got an African Grey 4 years ago. These can be a more complicated bird to care for than smaller birds. It is important to read everything you can about feeding an African Grey. I feed my guy uncolored pellets and also food I have cooked for him every day. He gets a "box treat" once a week or so too. The cooked food I give him is based on the "Mike's Manna Mash" recipe you can find online. I don't give my guy peanuts because they can have a fungus on them that is not visible and can be dangerous for birds. I also don't give him sunflower seeds because they are too high in fat which is bad for their livers.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com The cooked food I give him I make a large batch at a time. Then I will divide it up into 3 or 4 days worth per package and freeze in individual containers. I just defrost a container at a time in the refrigerator. It has mixed cooked beans, brown rice, whole grain pasta, diced sweet potatoes and also mixed vegetables. I also put red palm oil (just a tablespoon or so in a months supply of food) because palm nuts are one of their most common foods in the wild . You can sometimes purchase red palm oil in a health food store, or you can purchase it online.
For a treat I give my guy a raw almond or two. He also loves cheddar cheese, so I will occasionally give him a tiny bit of that too. I never give him a regular seed mixture, and he didn't seem to like nutriberries at all. He loves apple some days, and a taste of banana on other days and adores a 1/2 inch slice of corn on the cob if we are having some with dinner.

These are amazing birds and are a lot of fun too. But they are a big responsibility because they can live to be 50 to 70 years old or so.
