I purchased a Parakeet from Petco a couple days ago. We're seeming to bond already. He sits on my arm, with my arm in the cage and allows me to pet him. I consider that pretty good beings he was not hand raised and I am his first real human contact. I don't know much about parakeets so I had a question about his behavior today. He has been pacing really fast on the floor of his cage, acting as if he's had too many cups of coffee. He's been doing this for most of the day. He has plenty of perches, food, water, millet, and toys but won't touch the toys. The pacing is what makes me wonder what's going on with him.
I have had birds for many years, and I agree with Susanna about your bird wanting to come out. He likes the human bonding with you. Are his wings clipped, so he can't fly? If so, you could open the door to his cage , and just let him sit on top of his cage. Be sure there isn't anything around that he can get into and eat, or harm himself. You may find that he will try to get to you if possible. They are GREAT pets . Good Luck, and Enjoy
Sounds like he's nervous. He probably wants to be with you, since you're his security right now. Try taking him out to hold him more often, or leave his cage door open once in awhile so he can come out on his own and explore.
The pacing usually means that he wants to come out of his cage, or maybe you gave him too much millet. You should only feed a bird millet once a week.
