i have a mandarin tree in the house i just moved into, and the previous owner hasn't been looking after it so the mandarins are sour.It seems like a waste to throw them away, so i was wondering if birds will eat them. I live in Melbourne. (Australia)
Citrus is not poisonous to birds. The mandarins, sour or not, will be fine. Mine even eat lemons.
I have never heard of Citrus fruits being poisonous to birds-and I have been feeding my parrots mandarines for years-though I dont feed them often. My birds also regularly drink my orange juice, and it certainly hasnt killed them.
Were you planning on feeding them to pets, or to wild birds? If the wild birds were at all interested in them, they would have eaten them while they were still on the tree. Its doubtful that they would accept an offer of mandarines, particularly sour fruit. Birds cant taste the heat in chilli-but it doesnt mean that they dont have a good sense of taste!
I probably wouldnt try and feed my pet birds too many of the fruits, maybe the odd piece, but I certainly wouldnt be trying to pump a tree load of citris fruit into them-that could definately make them sick.

Id probably just throw them away-thats pretty much what I do with the mandarines from my tree
Citrus fruit is poisonus to birds! Do NOT let them eat it! Also is you have a bird as a pet do not use cleaners with any citrus extract in it to clean their cage either, Use Poop off, Which can be purchased at most pet stores.
