do birds like to sit for long on Bird Feeders?

was thinking of placing a platform feeder on top of a 6 foot wooden fence post,, such as this one.

http://birdfeedersstore.com/images/bird% ...

but was thinking of cutting another fence post in half (3 -4 feet) and attaching it to the top of the fence post in order for the birds to have something to sit on .. and place this bird feeder, perhaps, in the middle of this or buy one more and have TWO .. place on on one end and the other on the other end of the 3-4 foot piece of wood on top of the fence post .. (which they would like better too you think and why? (or was thinking of even taking 2 ---- 3-4 foot fence post and cutting a notch in one to lap over the other one in a cross direction on top .. similar to a sign post having two different ways. . and placing the bird feeder in the middle of the top one?

how they would like this you think and is the height of 6-7 foot enough for them .. if under some shade trees? and would they sit on it as much as they would a tree branch?

please explain what you can about your opinion on my idea above.

thanks for your answers!
Birds will sit at a feeder until they become satiated (meaning no longer hungry). They may hang out for longer if the area provides them with another resource, such as protection or the opportunity to find a mate . If it's breeding season, birds will hang out in the same location for long periods of time (months) as they construct nests, lay and incubate eggs, and feed the nestlings.

It sounds like you have a great location in mind for your bird feeders! It's ideal to position bird feeders close to natural cover, such as the trees you describe in your yard. Many types of birds will retrieve food from the feeder then return these protected places to eat it. Other factors to consider in terms of feeder placement:

> Your view of the feeders

> Nearby windows that birds may fly into

> Prevailing winds (you'll want the feeder protected from cold fall and winter winds and out of the line of driving rain and snow) pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

> Height of feeders (different birds prefer feeding at different heights; ideally you would have feeders located both high and low, even some on the ground).

You're smart to position two platform feeders at different heights. Different types of birds prefer to feed at different heights, so by offering feeders at a range of heights you improve your chances of attracting a wider range of birds. Birds that spend most of their time in trees, such as chickadees and woodpeckers, prefer to eat from feeders mounted high up (6-8 feet is sufficient). On the other hand, many birds spend lots of time on the ground, such as sparrows and towhees; these birds would prefer eating from a platform feeder located closer to ground level. You can also consider purchasing a platform feeder that is designed specifically for resting on the ground instead of using a hanging platform like the one you describe. A ground feeder such as this one ( http://www.yourbirdoasis.com/sc1012c.htm ... is nice because its low to the ground, doesn't require any installation, and has a screen bottom which drains water thus preventing the seeds from rotting. Expect to see a variety of juncos, robins, sparrows, and towhees at a ground feeder. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

If you're planning on mounting the platform feeder to the top of a 4X4 post, consider a mount such as this one http://www.yourbirdoasis.com/sc1008.html ...

In regards to your last question, as long as some of the screen bottom of your platform feeder remains open (ie not resting on top of the post) you should expect good drainage. Try mounting the feeder at a slight angle as to direct water towards a corner where it can drain from.

Finally, instead of setting up 2 platform feeders, consider getting a different type of feeder, such as a tube feeder or suet cage. The wider variety of feeder types and seed mixes you use, the wider variety of birds you can expect to see!

Hope this helps, good luck.
Yes but for 5 to 10 mins because they need some exercise and NEVER let a bird out of its cage it could rune off get injured or worse die
they might, and if birds find food, they would most likely come and try to eat it. birds are birds
yep they do needs lots of exercise though
One problem with bird feeding platforms like this is that they may feed the seed eaters, but also provide a dinner table for the prey species like Sparrowhawks. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

Your idea is a good one BUT you really need to provide shelter for the birds that visit either by way of a roof (which will also keep their food dry) or by siting your platform close to cover in the way of trees or bushes so that the birds are not totally exposed to their predators.
