right this has been driving me crazy as i can't seem to find out what it is.
I live in the North Yorkshire and on the outskirts of a town in the suburbs. There is a fairly busy main road nearby. For the past couple of nights i've be hearing this blood curdling screeching from which i can only presume is a bird . Its nothing i've hear before and resembless no sweet bird call or song.
It is very loud and echos in the nght and it does it in short sharp blasts every 2 - 5 seconds over and over for about 5 - 10 minutes usually as i think it flys off. I can hear it when all the windows are closed in my house. it's sounds horrible. When i first heard it I thought it was my rabbit shrieking or something outside which made me shoot downstairs in the middle of the night the firs time i heard it but it isn't.
It doesn't stop when i got outside and just carries on. It's hard to describe but i guess its kind of like "eeeEEEEEE! EeeEEEEEEE!" From the past 3 nights it ranges from 2am - 6am ish.
i would really like to know what it is cause it really freaks me out every night and gives me the fright of my life when i get woken up by it. All i know is that i think there are some kesrels or some small/medium sized bird of prey near my house but i've never heard this before.

http://www.tka .co.uk/yoc/links.htm http://www.birdwatch.co.uk/clubs/default ... ADD: OH MY GOODNESS, you live in Harrogate! The inter-web makes this a very small world at times (I live in US in suburb of Washington, DC). Guesses of a hawk/kestrel would be good (esp since uc them around) except you're hearing this call at night and those birds are diurnal. One would have to be pretty desperate for food to hunt at night. But I love a good bird id caper LOL. I found the 2 sites above that look like they're in your area, maybe a birdwatcher from a local group can identify.=:]

I believe you're hearing a barn owl. UK loves these birds, check the sites I've sourced. My niece is living in Harrogate, can't wait to make another visit to the area. It's so lovely.
The eeeEEEEEE sound you describe makes me believe it is a hawk. It is obviously a bird of prey and they love to hang out by busy roadways looking for some easy carnage.
