Okay so im about to get this chick and raise it to a chicken. I live in an urban area and the chick would live in a like 4x4x5 ft cage with 2 stories and a place to sleep and go for cover. I would leave it in my back yard. its legal where i live but does a chicken need to be on a farm and around others or does it not understand any of that. i hate to have an upset chicken. please let me know asap. thanks
only 4 feet in each direction to walk around? that would suck .. even if youre as small as a chicken.
he'll be fine but if you want him to be "happy" i'd consider revising your case dimensions.
well it should be fine for a chick but i wouldn't recommend it because chicks need one level and a heat light for warmth and a proper feeder and water dish you will also need a starter scratch feed and i would recommend a small outdoor coop for the chicken to graze on grass and small insects and for sunlight to stimulate egg laying i do not where you live so i don, t know if its legal no they don, t have to be on a farm as long as its 4.5m away from schools, hospitals, food shops and childcare centers for health reasons but a baby chick has to be kept indoors or in a garage i would highly recommend it to prevent the death of your chick but once it is about 15 weeks or older you can keep it outside full time and should have cover, a place to sleep, food and water

hope this helps
First off let me say that chickens are flock birds which means they live in communities of birds of like feather. You need at least two chickens in order for her to be happy. The pen you describe is ok for sleeping , laying eggs and as a safe area but you need to let your birds free range every day. That doesn't mean all day, but at least for an hour or so before you put them in for the night. They will learn to go back to the coop on their own. They also need a nest box if you wish to have eggs. Don't forget, crushed sea shells for calcium, grit for digestion and a good laying pellet, organic if you can.
chickens are not the brightest or require social interaction but do perfer space to scratch for food, chickens can cover several acres in a day foraging for food. commecial food and egg farms routinely keep birds in cages smaller than one foot square and justify this practice for profit . your space is adiquet for the birds suvival but you should let it out under your supervision when possible.
u shood get 2 chichens so they can keep each other company ... but if u do your gonna hav 2 make the cage 2x as big
it might get over heated but other than thats ok
Hi Soccerdude123 -
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com I looked at the link you provided and I say that's better suited for a rabbit not a chicken. Chickens don't climb easily for one thing. They enjoy roaming loose and scratching around unearthing bugs, slugs, beetle larvae, etc. She will have no room to be a chicken. Chickens aren't made to be kept in a concrete world within strict confinements. A 4x4x5 is pretty small in my opinion but if you have a fenced in yard you can release her so she can roam around and eat bugs and do what chickens do. If your concerned about her flying out of your yard you can trim one wing. This will prevent her from flying over your fence but she will be easy to catch by stray dogs if you have those roaming around your neighborhood . To answer your question as to whether or not the chicken will know any different - no, they don't care if they are on a farm or not. You will need to take very good care of your chick though. Your chick will more than likely become attached to you and will need lots of attention and interaction. They are really cool pets to have. I have raised chickens for the heck of it when I was a teenager and I really enjoyed it. I took on all the responsibility of their care. I had many chickens, more than 30 and each had their own name and recognized their own names too.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com As far as keeping a chicken within such confines is not the best choice.
Is there a specific purpose for raising a chick? Or are you just interested in having one? They are awesome to have. If you have questions please feel free to email me.
Have a great Day!
