I have been watching over a mother duck and her 12 eggs after my dog attacked her. Every day i brought her food and checked the injury on her wing. After she healed completely, I only checked on her every few days. 1 week later, she was gone leaving 2 eggs behind. One had tried to hatch but died. The other was tan. Is it dead? I didnt want it to die so i took it with me and put it in a small incubator. Is it dead?
Get into a very dark room or closet. have a 1/2in dia. small flashlight and hold it over the top of egg but make sure your hand is wrapped around the rim of the light base of the flashlight so the light is concentrated on the egg.
Starting with the 7th day of incubation you will see clear distinct veins (it's alive)
After the 12th day the live embryo will move when the light is directed towards the eye.
On the 26 and 27th day you will see the bill of the duckling moving inside the sac.
* The absence of veins is usually indicative that the egg is dead.

* Rings or streaks of blood within eggs indicates that the embryo died or never developed.
* Infected eggs are often dark and blotchy inside.
Remove any infected or dead eggs from incubator to avoid contamination.
