I am interested in owning a bird of prey but i don't know ANYTHING!! Does anybody know what you must do in order to own your own bird of prey? Or how old you must be?
You do not legally own a bird of prey in the US. The only way you can posses a bird of prey is with a falconry permit (must be used to hunt), rehab permit (treat and release) or education permit (can't be released, must be used for an education program) even with those permits the bird belongs to fish and wildlife and they can take the bird at any time if you are in violation of your permit either by not using the bird for the intended purpose or by not meeting housing requirements etc
Falconry is legal in all states except Hawaii and the District of Columbia. To practice falconry one must posses the proper state and federal licenses, which requires passing a written test, possessing approved equipment and facilities for your birds, and training under a licensed falconer for at least two years. At first you can only poses up to 2 birds at a time; after 5 years you can graduate to a Master Class license and poses up to 3 birds at a time.

Most falconers use a Goshawk or Peregrine Falcon. These birds are generally acquired by means of capture or captive breeding. Before working with these advanced species, falconers spend a number of years working with kestrels, Harris' Hawks, and Red-tailed Hawks.
If this is a sport you are seriously considering, I strongly advise doing a lot of research about the sport and the requirements. After conducting this research on your own, your next step would be to locate a falconer that would be willing to train you as an apprentice. Possessing a bird of prey, live or dead, is most likely against local, state, and federal law. Check with a zoo in your state or your local fish and game authorities.
