What is the minimum length for bird feeder posts?

I have a tube feed, with six feeding stations. I'm trying to keep the red wing black birds off this feeder. At present the post length is 1 1/8 of an inch. How short can I go and not lose my song birds? I do have a platform feeder for the larger birds.
Great question! If you want to shorten your perches without losing small songbirds, such as finches and chickadees, you can shorten the perches to approximately 1/2 inch. If this does not work, you can buy a cage to encompass your feeder, such as the Squirrel-Proof Blocker ( http://www.yourbirdoasis.com/dc18834.htm ... Also, you can try moving the feeder away from the platform feeder because red-winged blackbirds are infamous for flocking! Hope this helps.
